Osita Chidoka, a leader in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), argues that it is morally wrong for Governor Nyesom Wike to support his counterpart in Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The governor of Rivers State, who is a supporter of the PDP, the main opposition party, backed Sanwo-Olu of the APC on Tuesday (APC).
But while Wike is allowed to socialise with anyone, the moral responsibility falls on the Rivers leader, according to Chidoka, a member of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), who appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today. He stated that the governor’s conduct will need to be reviewed by the party’s leadership.
He did, however, make the following observation: “If he wants to support the presidential candidate of any party, he is free to do so; nevertheless, he has a moral obligation not to be sitting on a PDP seat as a governor and be talking about another candidate.
“Governor Wike has the liberty to do most of the things he’s doing because he has no skin in the game,” the former aviation minister said.
“That moral burden is more on Wike than it’s on PDP to justify why he is taking that position for a party that has been good to him from local government chairman to being the governor of a state.”
Recall that Wike asserted, at a conference for women in Lagos, that the standard of governance has increased due to the quality of the projects being completed around the state.
Mr. Wike, a prominent PDP opponent, appeared to be promoting APC Governor Sanwo-Olu in his remarks in the run-up to the 2023 elections.
“If Sanwo-Olu is not doing (well), even if he belongs to my party, I will not come here,” Wike said. “If you belong to my party and you are not doing well in governance, you won’t see me. If you don’t belong to my party and you are doing well, you will see me. Good governance is what I stand for. I will not regret to say that I am in support of you (Sanwo-Olu) for second term. Others should not waste their time.
