On Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Festus Okoye, the national commissioner of INEC, stated that INEC has already made provisions for the use of the BVAS in the more than 176,000 voting places nationwide. But he added that INEC has also planned for backup BVAS units in case a machine fails.
The Electoral Act of 2022 makes reference to the BVAS, a technical system that enables voter accreditation through biometrics collection and the uploading of results, among other things.

Many people have hailed it as an improvement over the smartcard reader used in the most recent general elections, which had some positive effects on the nation’s voting system.
“For each electoral ward, we are going to have some spare BVAS to be deployed speedily if there is any issue or any challenge in any of our polling units. We have also trained technical support staff that can also intervene if there any challenge with the BVAS
“But if there is sustained malfunction of the BVAS up to the time of the closing of the poll, the Electoral Act demands that we should undermine voting in that particular polling unit and repeat voting within 24 hours,” Okoye stated.
