According to Matthew Kukah, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Nigerians experienced the worst corruption during the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Bishop Kukah noted that although corruption did not begin under the previous administration, it was amplified by them in terms of morality, finances, and other factors. He made these remarks while delivering the keynote address at the 60th call to bar anniversary celebration of legal icon Aare Afe Babalola on Monday in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State.

“We have seen the worst phase of corruption in Nigeria, Femi Falana, my friend here will speak about that because he has published a series of articles talking about what happened under the Buhari administration.
“They were not the ones who caused corruption but I think in the last administration, we saw the ugliest phase of corruption whether in moral terms, financial terms and other terms,” Kukah said.
According to Matthew Kukah, Nigeria is sharing its constitutionally guaranteed sovereignty with terrorists and bandits because no one is proud to call themselves a Nigerian today, not even Presidents or Senators, and the nation is actually being held hostage by those who pose a threat to both our democracy and our nation.
Though he emphasised that he believes the judiciary is a victim, much like every other institution in Nigeria, Kukah acknowledged that many Nigerians have lost faith in the system.
He asserts that Nigeria should reconstruct itself “after the kind of mess the last administration has left the country,” rather than assuming that it is already a democracy, but rather that it is moving in that direction.
The Bishop declared that it was time to rebuild the nation, adding that he was confident that Nigerians had left their “ugly past” behind them regardless of what the Supreme Court decided on the election.
