Tony Ehilebo, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has criticised Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State for opposing former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye’s bid for governor.
Recalls that Wike claimed Melaye lacked the qualifications to serve as governor of Kogi State during a media interview on Tuesday in Port Harcourt. He emphasised that winning the governorship election is not a joke and that the PDP will be making a grave error if the former senator is chosen as the party’s flagbearer for the governorship.
Melaye blasted the governor for rejecting his bid for the governorship in a fast response, alleging that Wike was upset that Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, did not pick him as his running mate.
The contender for the governorship claimed Wike contacted him roughly 19 times in two hours, pleading with him to persuade Atiku to name him as the vice presidential candidate.

On Friday, Ehilebo asserted that Wike lacked the authority to meddle in the Kogi State election and did not have the authority to declare Melaye ineligible for the position of governor. He criticised Wike’s remarks and his attempts to harm the opposing party. He continued by saying the governor of Rivers shouldn’t believe he can act inappropriately without anyone calling him to order.
“Thinking he can stop Dino is an abnormality; is Wike from Kogi State? What warranted him calling media houses and berating a candidate of his own party? What necessitated that?
“If he has issues or he wants to support another person in Kogi State, he should know how to do that. This belief that he can misbehave and nobody can call him to order is impossible.
“Dino himself should not have given a response. He could have issued a statement but shouldn’t toe the same part with Wike.
“The Kogi issue is internal, if Wike wants to support a candidate, he should empower someone in the state who can speak up for him, not himself. This is an insult to Kogi people”.
